Join Mex-ECO Tours to witness one of the most famous traditional celebrations in Mexico, ‘Día de los Muertos’ (Day of the Dead); this tour is not to be missed by those of you interested in Mexican culture and tradition!
During this holiday, Mexicans decorate altars and grave stones with food, beverages and photos that remind them of their deceased loved ones, in the belief that their souls will return during this time to hear their families prayers and comments.
On day one of our trip we leave Melaque for the beautiful city of Morelia, whose downtown area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. After a tasty lunch and check-in at our hotel, we head into the historic centre of the city for a tour on foot. There are over 1,000 colonial buildings in the downtown area, all of which are protected by law and maintained in their original state.
Early on day two we head to the towns of Tzintzuntzan and Pátzcuaro, as well as smaller lakeside towns, where the Day of the Dead celebrations are at their most extravagant. We will learn about this wonderful tradition, and the special importance of it in this area, whilst enjoying the spectacular flower arrangements, Catrina dolls and other decorations.
At nightfall the graveyards come to life with the illumination from the hundreds of candles, and the crowds of people that flock in to celebrate the lives of their lost loved ones, or simply to join in the traditional celebrations. As well as visiting some of the most vibrantly decorated graveyards, we witness some of the most famous traditional Michoacán style dances performed by local dance groups in fancy dress.
