Michoacán, meaning ‘land of the fishermen’ in the Purépecha language, has diverse and spectacular geography and abundant flora and fauna. The capital of the region is Morelia, formerly known as Valladolid, and was made a UNESCO world heritage site in 1991 due to its more than 1000 colonial buildings and churches.
Experience Mex-ECO Tours chose Michoacán as a focus point for several tours due to its magical attraction to all who visit. With its festivals, artisans, cultures and traditions, as well as the breathtaking scenery and amazing wildlife, most visitors to this spectacular state return time and time again.
The ‘Morelia and Monarch Butterflies Tour’ takes you to the historical centre of the city of Morelia, where you will be pleasantly surprised by the colonial buildings, aqueducts and museums that make Morelia one of the most beautiful cities in Mexico. We also venture into the Monarch butterfly reserve to see one of nature’s most fascinating phenomenons:
It takes generations of monarch butterflies to arrive to over-wintering sites in the state of Michoacán from the Rocky Mountain area of Canada. The generation that arrives in the butterfly sanctuary enters a non-reproductive phase in order to save energy and prolong life-span to survive the winter. The butterflies then begin mating in March each year and begin their journey north.
This tour also includes the ‘Pueblo Mágico’ (‘Magic town’) of Pátzcuaro, as well as other culturally rich towns such as Santa Clara del Cobre, Tztintzuntzan and Cuitzeo.
Guided by a local expert, you will have the opportunity to learn about the traditions, taste the local cuisine, witness the historical architecture and ruins, and of course buy some souvenirs.
