Majahuas Biological Station is a secret paradise on the Costalegre – host to a concentration of animal and plant life that is hard to match anywhere else in the area, including endangered sea turtles; over 3,000 nests are collected each nesting season. For those of you who have an interest in wildlife and conservation, this is the perfect tour – surrounded by palm trees, a lagoon on one side and sea on the other, few words can describe it’s beauty.
This is a once in a lifetime chance to see the working relationship between a small Mexican community and the amazing creatures that they are trying to protect; an opportunity to learn about the work and effort that goes into such a relationship and the history that has led up to it. The ‘Roca Negra fisherman’s cooperative’ is the registered group in charge of Majahuas Biological Station and must rely on donations in order to maintain and develop their sea turtle conservation programme, for which they have recently formed a charitable organisation, ‘Campamento Majahuas A.C.’. Some of the costs involved in running such a programme include petrol and vehicle maintenance for patrolling the beach, materials for collecting and burying nests, maintaining water and power supplies to the camp, and much more.
